Doves
Contemporary Dance / Theatre - 1 hour 15 mins
Part road movie, part 80s noir and part fantasy, DOVES is a new work that charts the rite of passage of two very different young women – a journey full of desire, of change, of becoming and their need to see a completely new world.
Set against a filmic cyclorama (Adam Goodwin) and wrapped in a musical soundscape (Jamie Cook), two sisters (Cora-Jay Williams and Alice Henry) fight for survival and an understanding of who they really are.
Doves premiered at Dance City, Newcastle on November 7th 2019. The piece will tour the UK throughout 2020.
'In theatre we often talk about something being an ensemble piece in which each performer is of equal importance; here we have a different kind of ensemble piece, for the music and sound (by Jamie Cook at HOWZAT) and the film and animation (by Adam Goodwin) are as important a part of the story as the characters, as all make a substantial contribution to the impact of the piece. State of Grace has a unique approach to dance theatre; their work is always fascinating and involving and Doves is no exception. I understand a tour of the region is a strong possibility. See it if you can!'
'Reminiscent of Steinbeck’s epic storytelling, Doves follows a clear narrative arc, the human experience and expression captured through movement and physical action, and deals with themes that are universal to human experience: overcoming tragedy, the consequences of it, what family means, growing up, change, journeys, predators, and the joy and potential of love.'
